Video documentation of sound installation “Kronikka / Chronicle” in Galleria Saskia, Tampere in spring 2026
“The work emerges from practical skills and the hands need to work to become a materially impractical system. Is playing music a practical skill? In live music the sounds intertwine, becoming rhythm in time resonating through space, from the performer’s experience to the listener’s perception. How does mechanization and digitalization affect the experience of music? Where to find the boundary between music and sound, sound art? Between the performer and the instrument? I look back in time and find a sense of peace in what is old. Carrying a spirit, the mark of the human hand. It’s comprehensible in its mechanical operation. There is something hypnotic about watching time becoming in the train of gears.“
About the work
In the process of making my thesis in 2026 I shifted from the canvas to explore three dimensional material, sound and space. As a visual artist and musician I became interested in the dialogue between these mediums. In addition I was witnessing paintings piling up around me together with a sense of material anxiety. Since 2025 my creative process has been more about exploring than producing a vision already imagined. I felt a need to find alternative ways to create and repurpose, to use malleable materials.
In many ways I see myself as a practical thinker and doer, craftsman by nature. I find joy and comfort in learning the structure and workings of everyday objects which makes me more connected to my surroundings. It stems from the desire to alter those surroundings and to claim independence. Along the way it enables me to connect to more abstract ideas distinguishing the line between a designer and artist. I find that the practicality of mechanics and physical labour balances out the absurdity of making art.
